As one of the most anticipated films of the year, Black Panther is already setting records before it even reached the silver screen. The film has a set a new record for the most advance tickets sold of any Marvel movie. This unprecedented success in presales is undeniably linked to the representation and diversity seen in the film.
Although Black Panther doesn’t hit theaters until February 16th, Fandango decided to bless moviegoers and release tickets on Monday, January 8th. In the first 24 hours alone, it sold the most advance tickets out of any movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This was verified by Fandango’s managing editor, Erik Davis, in a tweet.
“Big news this morning – #BlackPanther sold more advance tickets on @Fandango in its first 24 hours than any other MCU movie, besting previous record holder Captain America: Civil War. Long live the King!”
And while presales don’t determine how a movie will do in the box office, it does show that a movie is popular and has an audience.
Why does Black Panther have such a large fan base? Simple. It is one of the few Hollywood films that includes and represents black people accurately and positively. The film is set in Wakanda, a fictional African country and features a star-studded predominately-black cast lead by Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, and Lupita Nyong’o….perfect! Black women are seen in positions of power that allow them to lead and be respected. The costumes are impressive…progressive and still have that traditional tribal touch. The soundtrack features local artists from South Africa and includes major American artists like Kendrick Lamar and SZA. Overall, people are excited to see this movie because it is so refreshingly different from what Hollywood usually endorses.
Ultimately, Black Panther is projected to make more than $90 million in its opening weekend. Advance tickets are still being sold and are not slowing down anytime soon.
