Less than a week after being acquitted of the 2012 double murder charges, for the death of Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado, former NFL star Aaron Hernandez was found dead in his jail cell. According to reports, Hernandez was found at 3am this morning after allegedly hanging himself with bed sheets. He also allegedly attempted to block and jam the door of his cell from the inside, as well. Efforts were made to revive the former Patriot, to no avail.
After Friday’s verdict, he was moved to tears and last seen blowing kisses to the daughter he fathered with fiancée, Shayanna Jenkins-Hernandez. Officials say that there was no indication that Hernandez had any desire to harm himself. Hernandez’s former agent, Brian Murphy, as well as an unnamed former teammate reacted to the news by saying they are not entirely convinced the death was by his own hands.
Yet, despite his acquittal, Hernandez was still found guilty of a gun possession charge, adding 4-5 years to his current life sentence for the unrelated 2013 murder of his former friend Odin Lloyd. No suicide note or explanation was left by the former tight end. However, we can only assume that the reality that this acquittal did not mean freedom for him may have simply been too much.
Prayers go out to the families of de Abreu, Furtado, and Hernandez. Hopefully they will somehow find closure in the events of the last week.
