Apparently, Doxygen Media is not the only platform looking to honor yesterday’s “Icon of Black History” Roberto Clemente. As a result of his extraordinary life, Legendary Inc. picked up the filming rights to showcase the ballplayer’s life story, based on the book written by David Maraniss, “Clemente: The Passion and Grace of Baseball’s Last Hero”. Renowned director Ezra Edelman (OJ:Made in America) is slated to direct the biopic. Film maker John Lesher will executive produce the documentary alongside Fuego Films’ Ben Silverman and Jay Weisleder. Both whom have worked on various professional sports icon films.
Legendary Inc. has already seen success in the sports genre, with the Jackie Robinson biopic “42” receiving box office and critical success back in 2013. The connection is an interesting parallel as Clemente was often compared to the innovative Robinson, as both players were viewed as founding pioneers for their races, both making groundbreaking racial strides in professional sports during the Civil Rights era.
Clemente once stated:
“I want to be remembered as a ballplayer who gave all I had to give.”
The documentary will begin production in early Summer but currently has no set release date.
