The Marvel Universe Casts “She’s Gotta Have It” Star DeWanda Wise

Netflix’s She’s Gotta Have It star DeWanda Wise will be joining the Marvel family with a supporting role in Captain Marvel. Wise will be working alongside big names like Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Jude Law, and Brie Larson.

This will be the first major film role for the She’s Gotta Have It star. Prior to this, Wise was also the star of the FOX series Shots Fired, as well as the recently cancelled WGN America series Underground, where Wise actually met her current husband Alano Miller.

Originally from Maryland, Wise’s career began while still attending NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, training at the Atlantic Theatre Company Acting School. She graduated with honors in both Drama and Urban Social and Cultural Analysis, with a minor in Community-based Theater and Performance. It was here that she landed smaller yet promising roles in independent films and shorts, many of which went on to win awards. Wise became incredibly well-versed in theater, acting, writing, and producing. She has had screenplays premiere at highly respected film festivals such as Cannes and starred in and produced Sundance’s “How To Tell You’re a Douchebag.”

When Wise was given the lead role in Netflix and Spike Lee’s 2017 adaptation of his 1986 film She’s Gotta Have It, her name became common place around the industry. Now she’s taking on a role of the lifetime as Monica Rambeau, who, in the original Marvel comic, became Captain Marvel herself. In this version of the Captain Marvel storyline, Wise will co-star alongside the film’s Captain Marvel, Brie Larson, and will be following at least two versions of the Captain Marvel storyline. Set in the 90s, this Marvel film will rely heavily on the sci-fi genre, but most of it’s other details are still being kept secret. What we do know is that Captain Marvel will follow the story of Air Force pilot Carol Danvers, whose DNA is fused with an alien’s during a flight accident, causing her to become Captain Marvel. The movie’s release is projected for March 8, 2019.

No word yet on how the L.A. based filming of Captain Marvel will conflict with Wise’s New York filming of She’s Gotta Have It season 2, whose renewal was announced on New Year’s Day. But if Wise’s many talents can tell us anything, it’s that she’s certainly one to pull it off.
