It was 2014 when the Wu Tang clan, (now deemed as Hip Hop royalty) released their last album A Better Tomorrow to honor the occasion 20 years since the release of their classic debut album Enter the Wu Tang: 36 Chambers (1994). Now Staten Island’s favorite group is back! Rza, who is widely known for being the unspoken “mastermind” of the group tweeted on August 25th, that the Hip Hop clan will officially be dropping their 8th studio album. Method Man, Raekwon, Inspectah Deck, Ghostface Killah, Sean Price and the late ODB are all contributors to the album. Long time associate, Redman also makes a guest appearance on the (already released) teaser “People Say”, which naturally has a savvy Wu Tang feel all its own. The L.P titled “Wu Tang: The Saga Continues” will be released this fall. Featuring production by the band’s long-standing producer Mathematics, the project will be officially released by RZA’s 36 Chambers Lifestyle Brand.
But really, think back to the days of C.R.E.A.M (Cash Rules Everything Around Me)! Who knew that more than two decades later, we would still be blessed to hear a pioneering group hit the mic. Although there have been a number of well-known internal issues within the group over the years, internal fights and rumors of the group splitting up, the band’s constant bounce back is remarkable. Raekwon spoke candidly in a 2013 interview with VLAD TV about a number of group members that had issues with Rza, who oversees all the group’s financial/business moves. (At one point, there was even a lawsuit thrown in the mix.) But then went on to say that though they may have their differences, Rza is the “glue” that holds them all together. And that despite some of the members moving in different directions at times, they are all “still connected to the hive.” He ended the segment by stating that “at the end of the day this is a brotherhood.”
Truth be told, the Wu has always been an interesting bunch. A clash of personalities that are dynamic by nature. And if there is one thing we have come to expect from this collaboration of talented rappers it’s rawness, realness and gritty punchlines. We have become use to each member bringing their own style and charisma to the table, stirring up a perfect blend of street flavor and catchy flows. Look for The Saga Continues to be no different. Headman Rza has already deemed the album a “Masterpiece”.
When it’s all said and done, perhaps the very thing that causes friction is the exact same thing that continues to bring them back together time and time again. They’re a band of brothers.
Because even still today, Wu Tang Clan ain’t nothing to fuck with…
*Wu Tang: The Saga Continues is set to drop October 17th, 2017.
